What is OnlyFans? What is AdmireMe? An intro to both platforms…
If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you might still be wondering “What is OnlyFans?”, or “How do people make money on OnlyFans?” The famous content sharing website, and sites similar to OnlyFans such as AdmireMe, have blown up in popularity since the start of the pandemic as so many search for new and creative ways to earn money from home.
But how does OnlyFans work? And is AdmireMe the same as OnlyFans? We will look into both of these sites so that you can really understand the workings of these platforms.
For years now, people who wanted to make money in the adult industry were left with few viable options other than to team up with a money-sucking production company who’d agree to film and distribute the footage, paying the stars a fee for their performances.
But this wasn’t fair, and still isn’t today, since the production companies were typically taking the lion’s share of the revenue, while the actual performers found themselves underpaid and left feeling used by the industry. Wouldn’t it be nice if content creators could take the whole production and distribution of their content into their own hands, and reap all of the financial rewards? This is where OnlyFans and AdmireMe stepped in!
OnlyFans / AdmireMe explained
To help you to understand how OnlyFans and AdmireMe work, you can think of them as social media pages that people have to pay to follow / become a friend of. Imagine you had an Instagram page where people had to pay a monthly subscription fee to see your content – with the main difference being that you can post adult content on your OnlyFans or AdmireMe pages.
With both of these platforms, your page’s feed is protected by a paywall, and once a user subscribes for the fee that you have set, they will be able to access this feed and view the content behind it… although you can also choose to lock individual pieces of content behind the subscription paywall too – and charge a further fee on a PPV basis.
How does OnlyFans make its money?
When a person subscribes to your content on OnlyFans or AdmireMe, both platforms take 20% of the sale price, and you as the creator get the other 80%. This is the industry standard pay-split for any subscription service like these, since the platforms need to cover their own costs of running the sites, handling the payments, and other associated business costs.
The creator receiving 80% of all revenue is a massive increase on the traditional adult-industry business models, whereby production companies would pocket the absolute vast majority of the revenue and leave the performers with just a fraction!
What can you post on OnlyFans / AdmireMe?
Technically, OnlyFans is not intended specifically for adult creators, it was simply a subscription site for creators of any type of content, including but not limited to adult material. However, it’s popularity with adult creators boomed, and basically gave off the impression that it was created solely for this purpose. If you really wanted to though, you are free to post cooking videos, cat videos, or anything you’d like… just like a subscription version of YouTube. If you’re here on Snexwork however, you’re probably planning to post adult content!
AdmireMe was created specifically for adult content, as its co-founder, well-known British creator Chelsea Ferguson, felt like there needed to be a better platform out there for adult creators to publish their material. She wasn’t too impressed with the OnlyFans platform and therefore felt that she could make a better platform than OnlyFans. Since the launch of AdmireMe, it has surged in popularity and become the main competitor to OnlyFans.
On both platforms, you can post photos or videos – which we suggest you do a mix of if you want to achieve success in the adult industry.
